RE: Tight turns with 4-Down Toad

We recently completed an approximately 8300 mile cross country/all around the country trip towing our 2008 Ford Taurus X. I had to make a few tight turns during the trip, tight enough that I was concerned about the car contacting the back of the motor home and did not have any problems what so ever. This combination tows/works great. I watched it in the rear view monitor and even had DW get out to monitor things. If things get really questionable, disconnect the toad till you feel secure enough to hook things back up.

RE: Are there any Diesel shortages

Check the Flying J website, www.flyingj.com . They show their truck stops which have reduced supplies or shortages. That should be indicative of fuel supply and availability in those areas.

RE: When in doubt...call Tech Support!

Most International Truck and Case Tractor Parts departments sell the test strips individually or in packs of three. You can check the expiration date on the spot and insure you purchase a current item. Also get your DCA2 or DCA4 there, depending what is in your cooling system.

RE: Pad Advice

Asphalt should work well. Insure you get it thick enough so it doesn't rut over time, a good contractor can determine the correct thickness for the weight of your coach. If it were me, I would rent a compactor and pack the area down well before any final surface is installed or have the contractor do it as part of the job.

RE: Winnebago Journey 34H 2007

We traded up from a 27' TT two years ago and are very satisfied with the floor plan and standard features and the coach overall. We spec'd very few options. I was a bit concerned initially about the ISB and 2500MH being adequate but have found them to be very satisfactory. (No, it does not perform like the Corvette I used to have.) I did add the Super Steer Motion Control Valves to the suspension and found the handling improvement very noticeable, especially in the notorious cross winds of Wyoming or Iowa. No problems with anything Winnebago but did have troubles with the bottom hinge of the Norcold refrigerator door breaking off - I repaired it and beefed it up, the rear vision monitor and the Parallax converter/charger failed and had to be replaced. My most vexing problems were with the HWH hydraulic leveling system. Working with HWH, a bad main pump relay was found and things have been good since. Overall external height was a significant factor for me. With the basement air and NO roof mounted satellite antenna the coach fits very comfortably through the 12 foot door opening of my big garage. We recently completed an approximately 8,300 mile trip all over this great country towing a 4,000 pound toad and averaged 9.37 MPG. Like RCtime and his wife, we love ours too!

For Bumpy in the next post, using the pocket door will hide the tooth flosser from your vision.

RE: What's near Fort Stevens State Park, OR

Check out the Coast Guard/Columbia River History Museum in Astoria. You could spend a whole day there if you are into the history of the area. (Not sure of the correct name but you should find it easily.)

RE: XC Chassis 300 HP Cummins ISB - Operating Temp

markz73,
You make no reference to your rig and/or the complete instrumentation you have. If you have only the dial gauge on the dash and nothing else, I can understand your concern. I have both the "dial" and a digital readout. My dial reads higher than I would like to see it, normally about the 3/4 point. However, the digital readout on the Light Bar Control Unit consistently reads 194 to 196 degrees under normal driving conditions. I feel that is the more accurate reading since that is what would be pulled up in any diagnostic tests. A diesel engine is most efficient at approximately 195 degrees. Keep your radiator and charge air cooler clean and make sure your slobber tube has been extended to route the oil fumes beyond the suction of the engine fan. Bottom line, I wouldn't be too concerned.

RE: Rt 30 in Indiana

Take a look at using I-70 to Indianapolis, then I-74 up to the Davenport area, then I-80 to Nebraska. Good roads and avoid all the Chicago concerns.

RE: DIY Lube Job

To help resolve the "low ground clearance" problem, I made six heavy HEAVY DUTY 2x10 ramps, six inches thick to give me more clearance when working underneath. They can be a pain to get into position but they are worth it when you need that additional room to maneuver.

RE: HWH Hydraulic Problem

I had a similar problem which turned out to be a broken wire in the main pump relay making intermittent contact. Circuits in the HWH system are completed by activating/connecting the ground circuit for the function desired. If/when you have another "failure," have someone hold one of the manual jack down switches while you, using a probe, ground each terminal on the relays. If the pump comes to life when you ground a particular terminal, you will have identified that relay as the culprit.

RE: Blinking overdive light on the shifter

Do you readjust your steering wheel/steering column frequently? On the Super Duty pickups, a frayed wire at the "flex" point on the steering column often causes problems.

RE: How's the cell service at ORA Ozarks?

Check the web site of your cell phone provider. Most have coverage maps for the areas they service. You generally need a zip code or street address to access coverage information.

RE: Hole in Battery

Like TEXAS suggested, find a battery dealer, not a parts store retailer. If the plates are not damaged, the case can be repaired and the battery acid can be replaced. Also, do a good job of cleaning up everything the spilled acid touched.

I use ramps under all six tires, six inches thick made from 2x10's. They are heavy but they give me the clearance I need without any safety concerns.

RE: Semi Permantent Magnetic XM Antennae Install

No need to put it on the exterior/roof if you have a rubber or fiberglass roof. In our TT, I placed the antenna in the top of one of the cabinets. In our current MH, I have the antenna placed inside under the front roof cap. Good reception in both situations and no holes or outside wires to contend with.

RE: engine battery not charged by power converter

There are devices on the market that connect the house batteries to the chassis batteries for charging from your charger/converter. Trick-L-Start is one of them and is standard equipment on many new coaches now. It charges the chassis batteries at .3 amps less than that going to the house batteries. Search the threads, many comments have been made on this topic.
